Payton & Matthew: Love, Laughter, and a Little Rain

Photographing Payton and Matthew always feels like catching up with old friends. This was my second time working with them, and let me just say—they bring such an easy, joyful energy that makes photographing their connection an absolute dream. This session took us to one of my favorite places: Cades Cove. And while the weather had its own ideas that day, it ended up being a shoot I won’t forget anytime soon.

We knew going in that it might be a little iffy—overcast skies and a 15% chance of rain. But honestly? That moody light was chef’s kiss. The first hour of the shoot was perfect. Soft skies, no harsh shadows, and the two of them completely in sync, sharing sweet glances and laughter that made my job way too easy. We got such beautiful shots in that first stretch—romantic, candid, and full of warmth.

After a quick outfit change, we started walking toward our next spot, and that’s when the rain started to sneak in. At first, it was just a light sprinkle—nothing we couldn’t work with. But by the time we reached the clearing, the sprinkle had turned into a full-on downpour. It quickly became clear that the rain wasn’t letting up. As much as we wanted to keep going, we had to call it early.

Even with the unexpected weather, the session still felt like a win. The way Payton and Matthew handled it all—with patience, laughter, and grace—reminded me why I love working with couples like them. It’s not just about the perfect lighting or ideal weather. It’s about capturing something real. And that little adventure in the rain just added another layer to their story.

The best part? I get to shoot with them again! And I cannot wait to pick up right where we left off. If this next session is anything like the last, I know we’re going to create even more magic—rain or shine.

Payton and Matthew, thank you for your flexibility, your energy, and for just being your wonderful selves. I’m so grateful to document these moments with you, and I can’t wait to keep building this story together.
